End of First Decade of 21st. Century
It's the end of another decade.
No better way to celebrate another successful 10 years in Bali then to take my family on a fantasy ski trip halfway around the world from Bali to the Swiss Alps.
The day before we left Bali I decided to enjoy one last magical walk on the beautiful beach in front of our Bali Paradise Beach Estates at 6 AM .
I strolled past the famous Saba River which has begun to flow in earnest again after an El Niño dry year
Then it was back to our beautiful beachfront estate at Bali Paradise Beach Estates
Later in the afternoon, I decided to have one last fantastic Balinese massage of the decade.
When people often ask me "why I have lived in Bali for 23 years"?
I state the people, the cost of living, and the seven dollars an hour massages in the privacy of my own home.
Since we had to leave early the next morning we decided to have our last dinner of the decade at the Standing Stone Restaurant across the street at the Royal Purnama Hotel.
Then, early the next morning we flew on Qatar Air for 10 hours to Doha.
We managed to organize for emergency seating with lots of regular legroom.
Qatar lived up to its first-class reputation.

To break up the trip we flew 10 hours to Doha which has very easy immigration rules, not requiring any visa for an overnight stay.
Within an hour we are already on our way to a restaurant to enjoy the local cuisine
The next morning we flew to Zürich in six hours and stayed at an AIRBNB apartment for two nights.
Zürich has some beautiful old buildings which we explored utilizing the very efficient and inexpensive electric trolley. It can take you anywhere in town.
At 5°C it was quite a change from our typical 33 °C in Bali's summer.
Here's a traditional Swiss building built of solid wood that is probably several hundred years old.
We were very fortunate to secure our own train car with no one sharing.
After we arrived in Lausanne it was a quick Uber ride to our home exchange for the holidays.
Home Exchanges:
One of the huge advantages of owning a home or villa in Bali is that people around the world beg you almost daily to exchange your home with them.
You can exchange on either a reciprocal basis or for guest points whereby they stay in your home and they give you points which you can use on thousands of homes around the world.
Several times a year we exchange our second home in Bali which is a four-bedroom five-bathroom luxurious estate, 200 m from the beach with a private 14 m swimming pool.
Obtaining a home exchange in Switzerland during high season for skiing is a feat in itself.
It took me days of searching and sending out as many as 50 messages to 50 different home exchanges requesting an exchange.
We finally settled on this three bedroom 3 Bathroom Home in Lausanne just a few minutes from downtown and the lake.
It is located in a very exclusive area of Lausanne with its own yard, garden area, and a large barbecue.
The kitchen is as modern as they come with everything you could ask for.
The dining area is equally as beautiful with a fireplace that my young son enjoyed firing up each night.
The living area featured a huge large TV with everything from Netflix to Utube.
They even left a Christmas tree for us.
The home is very well designed with many architectural considerations such as large window on the staircase.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms
The master bedroom had features such as an electronic bathtub and Jacuzzi along with an electronic shower.
There are several toys and games for the boys could enjoy.
One of the main features of this home is it is out of the congested Lausanne area but yet close enough within 15 minutes. 
On one of the rare occasions when it did clear up we are able see the magnificent Alps a hours drive away.
Another feature of most home exchanges is that you can also exchange your cars.
They provided us with a lovely six-passenger car.
They were even courteous enough to put a ski rack on top.
The heated seats were welcome at the 4° temperatures in the morning
About a kilometer away is this beautiful forest which we have just only begun to explore.
All in all this home exchange is much better than we expected.
We thank the owners for inviting us to enjoy their beautiful home.
Unfortunately, the first few days were mostly cold rain.
On a rare break in the weather, we went down and enjoyed a cold, windy photoshoot at Lake Lausanne.
Finally, my cold virus cleared up, unfortunately at the same time that my older son Xander came down with the same thing.
So my young son Darius, wife Azizah and I decided to schedule our first ski outing.
The day before went down to Aubert ski rentals and organized for skis, boots, and poles.
Then the next morning at 8 AM we took off for the Alps nearby known as the Porte du Soleil ( The Door to the Sun) across the border in France.
Unfortunately, there was not any sun although there was plenty of snow and the temperature was still a little too warm to ski.
50 years of Skiing:
That morning when I woke up it dawned on me that it's been 50 years since I first skied a major mountain in Vancouver Canada and began skiing in earnest.
So needless to say at an older age I took only one black run in the slushy cement-like snow.

So after six or seven runs each and soaking through two complete changes of ski clothing, we decided it was better to come back down and wait for better days since we still have 10 more days.

After only three or four hours of sleep, I woke up to watch the final impeachment debate at Congress.
I was ecstatic when Trump was finally impeached by Congress.

Christmas Day:
Now it is Christmas morning and I decided to do something extremely unusual, cook our own Christmas turkey dinner.
Why it's so unusual is because for the last 15 years I've had my own restaurant and chef in Bali who did it for us.
So dad is doing some research on stuffings and believes a little research along with his five years chef experience when I was a student will lead to a fulfilling, delicious turkey dinner later on.
