Continuing on day eight of the second week of our European ski vacation , as can be seen in the previous blog Bali family enjoys end of decade Alps experience celebrating 50 years of skiing.
At dawn on Christmas day, we woke up to a clear view of the Alps and 9°C temperature.
I was surprised to see one of Santa's reindeer roaming around outside, who obviously got separated from the team the night before.
Early on Christmas day, we decided to go for a drive and a walk along the famous Lake Geneva during some clear weather, which has been rare.
A few days earlier I did some research on Christmas dinners being offered by restaurants in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Unfortunately, all the menus were in French.
Even though I looked up the French translation for turkey I couldn't find any restaurant serving a traditional turkey dinner.
So we purchased a turkey, which was very difficult to find in the shopping malls.
After a lot of asking questions from people who spoke English, I finally found a shopping center and an actual turkey.
The turkey looked a little odd at first because it was already defrosted, which is not how I remember turkeys in North American shopping centers.
Secondly, it looked a little rough and discolored in places. Not the perfect turkeys that major companies produce in North America or even in Bali.
I now believe it was more like a free-range turkey as opposed to North American, hormone-filled look-alikes.
Never Cooked a Turkey:
It then dawned on me that for my entire life, which is a very long time I've never missed a Christmas turkey dinner and I wasn't about to start now.
This meant for the first time in my life and the absence of mothers and my chef from a restaurant in Bali I had to cook the turkey myself.
I thought "I'd rather ski off one of the most difficult runs on the mountain than attempt this feat".
So I purchased the turkey and then started doing research on how to cook it, which I've never done before.
An even more ambitious task was how to make a sophisticated walnut, celery & onion turkey dressing.
So we went to work.
Our youngest Darius broke up the hardened bread into 9 cups.
I cut the onions and the celery and Mom and Xander helped with the rest.
At first, I wondered how this large bowl of stuffing was going to fit into a small turkey, which I estimated at 7 Kilo.
But it did.
After reading instructions on how to form a foil tent then it was time to contend with a very sophisticated modern oven with a multitude of electronic dials.
I thought to myself, "you need to be a rocket scientist to figure this one out".
Then I had to convert the Google "how to cook a perfect turkey instructions" from Fahrenheit degrees to centigrade and place the turkey in the oven.
After an hour I realized I was doing it wrong as the turkey was not heating up.Finally I decided what I was doing wrong and preheated the oven 177°C
At this time with my family watching dad's frustration I was starting to get a little anxious.
Approximately two hours later when I finally decided that the turkey was done without the use of a thermometer I experienced an abnormal sense of pride as I produced the proud bird for my family to view.
In conclusion, with a few hours of work and the entire family's help we enjoyed a perfect Christmas turkey dinner.
Instead of going to a cold restaurant and eating turkey made without love we all retired soon thereafter with a really warm feeling.
We agreed that we would do this again in the future.
