Indonesia celebrates Mother’s Day in a big way every 22 December. This is a different date to most of the rest of the world that celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day is not a public holiday in Indonesia but it is widely observed across the country with public events and family traditions.
YearDateDayHoliday2019 22 Dec Sun Mother's Day
2020 22 Dec Tue Mother's Day
The reason Indonesia celebrates Mother’s Day on a different date is because the first Indonesian “Women’s Congress” convened on that day in 1928 in the interests of promoting women’s rights, and this was, therefore, the date chosen by Indonesia’s first president when he established the celebration in 1953.
In Indonesia, Mother’s Day is meant to honour all women, even if not actually mothers. The celebration is tied up with the history of feminist movements for equal rights and with the contribution of women to Indonesia’s independence movement during the days under Dutch colonial control.
Many women are given cards, flowers, or a small present. And children and fathers may help more with household work to honour the women of the house who traditionally shoulder the household chores.
