Nothing is Certain in this world except for death, taxes and cataracts for most.

Ben Franklin once said in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”.

Many things have changed in the last 230 years since Ben Franklin wrote that famous quote.

Death is still certain but has been extended almost twice as long.

Taxes have definitely changed. In the past, it was certain that almost everybody paid taxes. Nowadays people like Amazon owner Jeffrey Preston Bezos pay hardly any taxes.

The fact that people are living substantially longer means that almost everybody now will sooner or later have cataracts. It is a fact of life.

Therefore in 2019 we must add cataracts to that saying because it appears over 90% of all adults will eventually have Cataracts in their lifetime.

 Cataract Diagnosis:
Lawrence far left at Bali Tennis Tournament he Ran

I became aware of my cataract dilemma over a year ago when I began to find it more difficult focusing on the tennis ball and my computer screen.

While on a trip to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for my annual medical exam I underwent a series of extensive eye tests.

The diagnosis was that I had cataracts, which I was not aware of, but would have two deal with.

After a long consultation with a very empathetic Dr. we concluded that with the rapid changes that are taking place in cataract treatment perhaps I should wait as long as possible.

You may have seen advertisements recently on Facebook stating that they now have drops that will dissolve cataracts.

When you do research into it you find that they’ve only been used on animals and their years away from having them available for the public.

I just couldn’t go another couple of years with failing eyesight.

I finally realized just a few months ago that I had to do something now, especially before I go on our annual Christmas vacation to Switzerland for skiing.

It would be very sad indeed if I had to view the stunning Swiss Alps through clouded eyes.

Life is too short not to be able to see properly.

I work on computers for six hours every day. My eyes were getting tired after a few hours and this was costing me time and money.

Equally as important to me is that my tennis game was starting to suffer.

So I did some research on doctors who specialize in cataract surgery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Why K.L. because I have discovered during the last couple of years during my annual health checkup that the doctors in K.L. are just as good as any in Asia and substantially less expensive.

I finally decided on Dr. Yap Soon Lek at USJ Eye Specialist, No 39, Jalan USJ 10/1F Taipan Business Centre 47620 UEP Subang Jaya Selangor. Phone: +60 3-8011 8033
I want you to know from this point forward in this blog I receive no compensation from Dr. Yap or USJ Eye Specialists for recommending them.

I provide this detailed information for one purpose only to share extensive research that I have completed and the successful operation that has allowed me not only to remove cataracts but eliminate glasses for the first time in my life.

I choose the USJ Eye Specialist clinic for several reasons.

First, although the reviews were not 100% positive detailed research into the reviews revealed that the complaints were primarily about the staff and patient communications.

I didn’t find any serious complaints about Dr. Yap or any of the patients that he had done surgery on.

I reasoned that I’m not going there for a social club I am going there for surgery and I want a surgeon that has few or no complaints.

I initially sent out a request for information to several major clinics in Kuala Lumpur and found right off the bat that the response was very unprofessional from most of them with the exception of the USJ Clinic.

A very professional young lady, Elise, responded promptly with very clear answers to my questions in excellent English.

Professional staff Elise and her friend
She replied “Firstly we can schedule an eye examination with our surgeon, Dr Yap to check your eye condition before we set the operation date. The specialist consultation fee starts from RM120, this does not include medication, further examination, scans or treatment.

you have decided to do the cataract surgery, pre-operation assessment including lens calculation and health assessment can be done on the same day or 1 week before the plan operation date. The pre-operation assessment will cost RM250.
Our surgery days are on Tuesday and Friday. The cataract surgery takes approximately 30 mins, and will perform one eye at one time, then 2nd eye can schedule to perform the surgery a week later.

Post operation review will be the next day, 1 week, 1 month after the cataract procedure.

The price for cataract surgery depends on the type of lens that you choose. Generally, there are two types of the intraocular lens; Monofocal and Multifocal.

For monofocal, the price is starting from RM2500 and multifocal starting from RM6800. The multifocal toric cataract surgery cost RM10,800 per eye. This price is inclusive of the lens, surgery and 1st day follow up consultation. The prices stated is for one eye only.

As which type of lens is suitable for you, we need to do pre-op first ,then doctor can recommend accordingly base on your needs and situation”

I decided because of timing with my forthcoming trip in mid-December that I better get it done now and set a schedule to meet Dr. Yap a little over a week ago.

We arrived at their clinic and immediately realized we needed to remove our shoes to avoid any germs entering even the reception area which could be carried over to the surgery area.

Contrary to a few of the negative testimonials that I read about the clinic I found the staff is as friendly and professional as anywhere else in the world including my own country of Canada.

Elise was right there and spoke excellent English. She got us started right away and prepped me for my first tests and consultation.

Elise, Azizah, and I
What Type of Lenses Should You Choose?

After days of research on Google I found lots of confusion regarding what type of lenses were best.

You basically have a choice of Monofocal lenses or Multifocal.

Monofocal are good for nearsighted patients only and will not address your vision concerning a computer display screen or reading, including mobile phones.

Multifocal which are 50% to 100% more expensive apparently can resolve all vision requirements including long-distance computer and reading.

The problem with multifocal is that you may not have perfect vision at different distances and you may have a halo around lights at night.

So right now there is a lot of confusion on which lenses to choose.

I read everything from inserting the Multifocal in one eye and Monofocal in the other from someone who was an avid tennis player.

Needless to say I was very confused until after the initial consultation with the doctor when he recommended we try a Multifocal in the less dominant left eye and see how that works out. Then we would decide what to do with the dominant right eye.

In cataract surgery, the lens inside your eye that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) to restore clear vision.

Although I had had laser surgery approximately 10 years earlier which eliminated my lifetime need for glasses for nearsightedness I was still a little apprehension about someone cutting open my eye and inserting an artificial lens.

Day of Surgery:

On the day of the surgery, I arrived early and was prepped with a series of eye drops that dilated my pupils and then finally with a Xanax pill to calm me down a little bit before I went into surgery.

I asked for two but they denied me even though I found that I always need twice as much of any drug including when I go to the Dentist. Something about my physiology.

Obviously, most everyone will have some apprehension about somebody cutting the top layer of their eye and inserting an artificial lens.

I found the doctor's surgical staff to be extremely professional and it wasn’t long before he had opened up the top lens of my eye was breaking down the cataract with ultrasound and vacuuming it out.

The whole procedure was basically no more painful than going to a modern Dentist.

When he inserted the multifocal lens it felt a little foreign.

I had fears about perhaps I might have the same problems that I had in the past with contact lenses whereas I couldn’t wear them as I was allergic to them. But much to my satisfaction, there is no apprehension after the first hour.

After the surgery, you’re put in a room to relax for about 30 minutes and finally, the doctor does an inspection with high-powered instruments as to the placement of the lens and sees if the surgery was okay.

Basically within two hours your in and out of the clinic with the new lens in one eye.

You are advised to keep the eye covered with a plastic protection cover to avoid any contact with any foreign substance which is very critical at this early stage.

Post Surgery:
Almost within hours of surgery, the first thing I noticed after I took the plastic protection off was that there is a dramatic difference between my left eye and my right eye not just in focus but also clearness.

After you had cataracts developed for some time you don’t realize its clouding your vision. Much like looking through a yellow-tinged ski google or sunglass.

When you have the cataract removed and the new lens installed all of a sudden you’re seeing natures true colours.

I couldn’t wait to get the second lens installed.

My thoughts went towards my recent extensive work on websites designing our new quality Bali Luxury Retirement Villas website and probably that all the colours I chose were off by 20% to 30%.

Second Surgery:

The original arrangement was for us to have one eye done, have an inspection the day after the surgery and fly back to Bali. Then come back a week later to repeat the procedure for the second eye.

The doctor was gracious enough to allow me to have the second eye done three days later on the following Tuesday.

So on Tuesday, we repeated the procedure. Weirdly enough the second time it was more difficult with my eye twitching a lot more.

I apologized in the follow-up inspection to the doctor and he said it was normal.

Psychologically people are so apprehensive about the first one after it’s done so easily and noninvasively you’re expecting it to be even easier the second time and so you get a little lax. Weird how the mind thinks.

On the following Tuesday, the second one was completed with a follow-up inspection the next morning and on a plane that afternoon to Bali.

I forgot to mention that prior to the surgeries the day before you have to take a series of drops every two hours. Although they did not ask for fasting I did read that perhaps six hours fasting prior to the surgery would be beneficial.

The costs were substantially less than what you would pay in the West or even places like Singapore for similar surgery.

In my opinion the doctors are just as competent.

One Month Recovery:
The only negative thing is that you must be careful with your eyes. You have to take 2 to 3 eyedrops every 3 to 4 hours.

You must wear the plastic eye guards at night for sleep so that you don’t accidentally scratch your eyes or your spouse doesn’t roll over and wack you.

You must, of course, prevent any water from entering your eyes, especially during showering.

I soon discovered a quick solution to this problem. Everywhere I travel I take a snorkel mask with me to avoid getting infections from swimming pools etc.

Simply put this snorkel mask on when you go into the shower and make sure is watertight.

Make sure you dry off your head before you take it off and you will avoid this problem 100%.

I am also going to experiment with walking around the swimming pool with a Tilly Hat on and a snorkel mask on to avoid any water getting to my eyes.

That way I can achieve upper body exercise as well as walking around the pool providing for lower body exercise.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to work although my wife Azizah is going to go crazy when I do it the first time. I won’t do this until a week from now.

The only thing I find most frustrating about the whole thing is that I won’t be able to play tennis or any heavy sport for a month.

I just realized that I have a tennis tournament that I am entered into on November 29th so it’s perfect timing.

I can’t wait to slaughter opponents that were marginal with me before with my vision 30% better.

Benefits:

The frustration is overcome by simply changing my exercise routine to do long walks in the morning and discovering places that are only 500 m away from me that I have never been to plus the daily improving vision which gets better and better by the day.

In fact, I have just spent the last two hours dictating and editing this lengthy blog with no glasses. Remember that’s only four days after my last cataract was removed.

Last night I went to a movie and did not need any glasses. On the way over to the movie I read the news and social media on my mobile phone without glasses for the first time in my life.

The Miracle of Science:

It is a miracle of modern science that for the first time in my long life I no longer have to worry about carrying glasses with me.

Azizah will have more room in her purse because she doesn’t have to carry sunglasses and reading glasses.

Azizah Lawrence and Boys 2019
My boys won’t have to worry about retrieving them from my office when I need them.

Not to forget the price of glasses which for someone as careless as me can cost up to $1,000 each year.

Apparently, the lenses will last a lifetime so that is a lifetime of no longer depending on glasses.

Is cataract surgery for you?

So should you have cataract surgery?

It is up to you if you want to see the true colours of the beautiful world around us just do it.

Yes, there may be some natural resolution of this problem in the future such as eyedrops but according to my extensive research, it may be years yet.

At my age every day, every hour, every minute is a blessing and I want to enjoy that blessing with clear vision.

Many thanks to Dr. Yap, Elise and all the staff USJ clinic for this miracle of life.
K.L. 2019 – 10

Most important my deepest thanks to my dearest wife Azizah who supported me every step of the way to achieving the solution to a serious problem.

She has been the best nurse and I love her dearly.

I only hope that the Bali government will wake up the fact that medical tourism is a huge business, especially with 25% of the population reaching the baby-boom age and retiring.

These boomers need everything from hip replacements to cataract surgery and even cancer treatments.

Bali and Indonesia can continue to keep a closed system barring foreign medical professionals from participating or they can do what they did in the hotel business, allow the professionals to come in as trainers and of course provide them some profit for their efforts.

Bali could be one of the top medical tourism spots in the world.

After all who would not rather come to Bali and stay in a beautiful villa for $100 a day with private maids waiting on them full-time while they recover from their minor surgeries and medical treatments.
